Segundo “Sy” Aguon Unpingco passed away peacefully among family and close friends on November 26, 2015. He touched many lives and will be greatly missed by all who knew him.

Sy was born on May 21, 1934 in Guam to Jose Rivera Unpingco and Vicenta Aguon Unpingco. At the young age of 18, he met Remedios “Remmy” Pangelinan and married her in 1953 while still in high school. Together they had 3 children, Segundo Jr., Vivian, and Paul.

After graduating from George Washington High School in 1954, he left for the United States to pursue his college education and life-long learning experience. His wife and children shortly followed. They lived in Santa Clara, California, and later San Jose, where they maintained their residence for over 40 years. Sy received his A.A. from San Jose City College, B.A. from St. Mary’s College and J.D. from Lincoln Law School.

Throughout his life, Sy managed his family’s business interests in Guam. In addition, he worked for the Santa Clara County Sheriff’s Department and served as a courtroom bailiff until the time of his retirement. In retirement, Sy became an avid golfer. In 1978, he co-founded the Chamorro Golf Club of Northern California and served as Chairman of the Board. He also co-founded the Hafa Adai Golf Classic, an annual golf tournament that brought Chamorro golfers together from all over world.

Sy’s greatest passion was his family. He loved being with his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. He never missed a birthday party, recital, performance, or graduation. He believed that his family was his greatest achievement and was tremendously proud of the legacy he would leave behind of wisdom, the Chamorro culture, and love of God.

Sy is survived by his wife of 62 years, Remedios Pangelinan Unpingco; his three children and their families, Segundo (Cy) Unpingco Jr. and his wife Elizabeth Brand Unpingco, Vivian Unpingco Thorbourne and her husband Raoul Thorbourne, Paul Unpingco, and daughters in-law Sylvia Villegas Unpingco and Nancy Hintz; his 8 grandchildren, Jason Unpingco, Christina Unpingco Newton and her husband William Newton, Maria Elena Thorbourne, Alana Thorbourne, Robert Michael Unpingco and his wife Ashlee Huber Unpingco, Elizabeth Unpingco, Ian Unpingco, and Abby Unpingco; and 4 great-grandchildren, Jesse Newton, Audrey Newton, Isaac Unpingco and Sophia Unpingco.
